There are four accepted colors for the German Shepherd Dog; black/tan, bi-color, sable and solid black. The first three colors, each one of them has its own variations. In this article I will try to show example of each color and its various variations in a simple understandable presentation.
For show line type, this color comes in a saddle back pattern (also called black jacket) and ranges from black/red to black/tan tone.
For work line type and work/show cross, this black/brown color comes in a blanket back pattern, but again, it comes in various brown ground tones.

C ِِ. Solid black:
We usually find this color in work line type of German Shepherd Dog, but we also find it in show line type in Russia and few Eastern Europe countries.
Medium Dark Sable
Saddle Back Sable
This color pattern is usually found in show and in work/show cross German Shepherd Dog types, Red sable, in my opinion, is a very beautiful color.
At last here is a video that explains the German Shepherd Dog coat colors, please note that solid white color German Shepherd is a seperate breed and GSD breed does not accept this color, also liver and blue colors are considered faulty colors and a GSD breeder should not breed for those colors.
